May 9, 2008 Dear Friends: The Headwaters Foundation is moving its Allies for Justice Awards Dinner to a new venue. Same date. Same time. Same program. Same great people. New Venue...
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. WHY are we moving the event? Allies for Justice was originally set to take place at the McNamara Center, which has an exclusive catering contract with D’Amico & Partners. As you may know, D’Amico and 15 former Latino employees are caught in the middle of a labor dispute that stems from our nation’s misguided and contradictory immigration policy. In support of our allies and community, many of whom were concerned and conflicted about participating in an event catered by D’Amico—Headwaters made the decision to move the location of the Allies Dinner. We listened to D’Amico & Partners, to Workers Interfaith Network, to social justice community leaders and activists, to professionals in the immigration field, and to other stakeholders and decided that the decision to move the event best supports our goal for the Allies for Justice celebration: to recognize exceptional social justice work in our community. We acknowledge not everyone will agree with our decision. We also know that thoughtful dialogue and discussion are crucial with every social justice issue— and thoughtful people sometimes disagree. We hope that you will continue to join us in keeping the dialogue going towards a just solution. We’re committed to doing the right thing. We’re committed to doing it honestly and with integrity. Headwaters supports systemic change and recognizes the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform. We support all of our grantee groups working toward an overhaul of the current immigration system—a flawed system that allows civil and human rights violations. We stand with workers as they fight for justice in the workplace and support those working for national immigration laws that are fair and just. We hope you will join us at the Allies for Justice Awards Dinner. Together we can celebrate the wonderful social justice work that is happening in our community.
